Avast's "Browser Cleanup" tool has a bug that may cause it to delete a large number of installed programs on your hard drive, while removing "unwanted" toolbars.
It sounds kinda far-fetched, but this tool just deleted a bunch of stuff from a relative's computer that I was working on, including Google Chrome, Google Earth, most of Firefox (it was running at the time but now it no longer starts), Malwarebytes AntiMalware (for shame!), Steam and all installed Steam games, some Microsoft components, and a bunch of other probably-important stuff.
So now I'm going to have to try an undelete tool and/or System Restore, to see how much I can get back... (I hate having to rely on System Restore. I've actually never had a success with it!)
Judging by the overall atmosphere around the Avast support forums, this tool has other issues as well. Thus, I am recommending that every Avast user uninstall the "Browser Cleanup" component.
This is done in "Add/Remove Programs" AKA "Programs and Features" in the Windows Control Panel. Find the Avast program, then select the "change" option. You should get to a list of installed components, in three columns. "Browser Cleanup" will be in the middle column. Deselect it, and then Avast will essentially reinstall itself without that tool. When installing Avast, you can select "custom installation" to get to the same list of components, and deselect "Browser Cleanup" to prevent its installation.
Avast is still, in most ways, one of the best free antivirus programs out there, but this tool is just... bad! Thank goodness it's optional!

I hate it. I'm out.
First and foremost, I want to acknowledge the efforts of some of the remaining DA staff - especially @danlev and @ikazon - to reach out to a few DA users to discuss a few of their concerns about Eclipse. Undoubtedly a full-time job these days. Thank you both for offering so much of your time. And I'll admit that some of the new features are pretty neat. To reference a comment made here earlier by ikazon (that I can no longer find due to apparent browser compatibility problems): There is plenty to be excited about. I hate it. The thing is, even if I took the time to list every single little thing I hate about this new layout: Every piece of functionality I used to rely on and can no longer find (35S 12J 5C), every function that now takes six clicks to access instead of just one or two, every weird little layout bug that there can be no excuse for, every odd little quirk that makes my Firefox go nuts
No more new content here for a while
I won't be posting any more content here until DA's future (or lack thereof) is more certain.
Quite frankly, I tried Eclipse and after 24 hours simply could not stand it anymore. So if DA goes through with their plan to force Eclipse permanently upon their userbase, I am out. All the way out.
(Seriously, team (https://www.deviantart.com/team) / hq (https://www.deviantart.com/hq) / whoever's in charge; Eclipse is bad and you should feel bad.)
I'll be posting more drawn art to my FA (same name as here), and possibly hosting my fractal wallpapers on my own site if there's any interest in those. I also write music, so I may consider getting a SoundCloud... and/or just putting music on my YouTube if that's
So here's what I've been doing lately...
Okay, that's enough of that last Subpar Journal Wittiness.
If it seems like I'm not doing very much right now, it's mainly because I'm doing a lot of different things simultaneously, and that makes everything take forever.
For example, here's a partial list of what I've currently got in progress:
- A browser script that'll make long random hard-to-hack passwords using just the name of the site you're on plus a shorter keyword of your choosing. It will work like more advanced "password manager" addons, without storing anything at all on your computer.
- Learning how to write music using "Deflemask", a rather interesting tracker for retro c

Thank you SOOOO much for this! This thing has been popping up for a while, and it has long since overstayed its welcome. I tried it once to see what it would delete, and when it listed Google Chrome, I was like, oh hell naw. Glad to see I can get rid of it!
Chrome and Firefox are my babies; they aren't going anywhere.
